The State of Campeche is located in the southwest of the Yucatan peninsula and southeast of the Mexican Republic. Bordered north with Yucatan State, south with Tabasco and the Republic of Guatemala; to the eats with Quintana Roo and Belize, and west with the bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Historical Center of Campeche was designed in the Renaissance stile of a “chess board” in accordance to the specifications of the Spanish Crown. On the square closest to the sea the central park was built and main town square.

Campeche, Cultural Patrimony of Humanity
On December 1st the committee of World Patrimony and the Organization of Nations for the Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) awarded Campeche City for its beautiful colonial architecture and restoration of its facades. Thanks to the combined effort of Campeche State Government and Campeche City Major to implement laws and regulations regarding the development of the Historical Town Center and local neighborhoods and businesses, Campeche has been able to preserve and restore its historical beauty.
On June 27, 2002 UNESCO awarded Cultural Patrimony to Calakmul for all of its work in maintaining and restoring the ruins, along with its preservation of fragile ecosystems and native plant and animal lives. Campeche is the sixth Mexican State that has been awarded Cultural Patrimony twice by UNESCO.

Religious Architecture
Campeche developed a simple religious architecture, characterized by its military construction as wide walls and fortresses. When the first Franciscans constructions began, it was thought in the probable Indians uprisings and the necessity that would have the Spanish population to protect themselves. With time surged another motive of why the churches should have a fortress characteristic, this was the continuous pirate attacks in the Villa of San Francisco Campeche.
