The island of Holbox, whose name means "Black Pit" in Maya, is located to the northeast of Cancún and is 42 kilometers (26 miles) long. It is separated from the main land by the lagoon of Yalahao. Holbox is almost a virgin island in that very few tourists make stops there. It has been converted into an ideal location for relaxing and getting away from the stress of the city.
The people of Holbox are mainly fishermen, but they may offer you a boat trip to places near the island like "la isla de la pasión" (the island of passion), "Isla Pájaros" (Bird Island) which is a sanctuary for different types of birds which have their nests on the island or to the center of the lagoon Yalahao. The streets of this island are covered with white sand and the people live in multicolored wooden houses.
How to get here
To arrive at Holbox you take the Cancun highway to Chiquila. From there you will have to take a boat to cross the Yalahao Lagoon (10 kilometers/6 Miles) and begin to enjoy the adventure and the unimaginable contact with nature and enjoy the breeze, the sea and the natural attractions of the island Holbox without forgetting to spend time with the flamingos, dolphins and the whale sharks.
Swim with Whale Shark- Holbox Island
The months of June through September is the ti

Yalahao Lagoon & Eye Water
As part of the Yum Balam Reserve it is almost obligatory to visit Yalahao Lagoon where you will find diverse birds like the flamingo. This area is covered by mangroves. You can get a tour by boat with one of the operators on the island and swim in the Yalahao Lagoon where the water is fresh and clear.
Isla Pasion
It is a small island that is 15 minutes from Holbox where you can enjoy the sun and sea since its clear waters are not very deep.
